We used to train at the start of our careers and then use those same skills throughout our professional lives. Today the half-life of a skill has <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/focus\/human-capital-trends\/2017\/learning-in-the-digital-age.html\" target=\"_blank\">fallen to just five years<\/a>. With the pressure to constantly learn and <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/top-10-resources-2019-upskilling-your-workforce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"upskill (opens in a new tab)\">upskill<\/a>, but without a clear career path or opportunities to grow, employees are leaving their companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/tenure.nr0.htm\">around every five years<\/a> to advance elsewhere. And that\u2019s a problem for employers and employees alike. Turnover brings a loss of organizational knowledge, fewer mentorship opportunities, and a massive financial drain due to constant external recruiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Degreed, we\u2019ve been laser-focused on solving this problem and slowing the constant churn. In the simplest terms, it\u2019s a system that matches learning and upskilling to real career opportunities. It enables <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"talent leaders (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/teaching-managers-ld-pros\/\" target=\"_blank\">talent leaders<\/a> to ensure that all learning and development efforts can be put to use by mapping them to the most in-demand skills and projects at their organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, L&D and recruitment teams have operated relatively independently. Our Skills I\/O can help integrate those operations, communicating L&D efforts in terms that help inform internal and external recruitment, internal mobility, and employee retention initiatives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve just started to develop a strategy that links learning to mobility, the Skills I\/O helps you gather baseline data on your people and then establish a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"skills taxonomy (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/skills-quotient-solution-ceos-biggest-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\">skills taxonomy<\/a>, or skill library, derived from the most common skills used on our platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you\u2019re an existing Degreed customer, you already have this at your fingertips. If you\u2019ve started to catalog your skills, simply import your library into the Skills I\/O by following these steps under <em>Manage Degreed<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Select the skills tab and navigate to <em>Manage Skills<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-in-post-2-5.png\" alt=\"Manage Skills \nDegreed Screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-36894\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To bulk upload your skills taxonomy, select <em>Update Skills<\/em> from the <em>+Add a Skill<\/em> drop-down menu. Once you\u2019re in the <em>Update Skills<\/em> menu, load your file of updated skills to create a standardized taxonomy. Your updated skill library will be ready to use in minutes. Don\u2019t have a copy of the template? No problem. You can download it right from the <em>Update Skills<\/em> menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-in-post-3-4.png\" alt=\"Update Skills\nDegreed Screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-36895\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As skills continue to evolve within your organization, you can easily add new ones and streamline equivalent skills one-by-one through the same <em>+Add a Skill<\/em> menu as the bulk upload feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-in-post-4-4.png\" alt=\"Add Skill\nDegreed Screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-36896\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With your library loaded, you and other admins can dynamically manage it to ensure that it matches the current and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"emerging skills (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/build-your-own-incubator-emerging-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\">emerging skills<\/a> that your team is building and acquiring. And since your people are the most knowledgeable about their roles, skills, and needs, they can use their expertise to add skills as their <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/reducing-inefficiencies-labor-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"roles evolve (opens in a new tab)\">roles evolve<\/a>. This makes the system as nimble as your individuals are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through this process, you can gather unique insights into the skills that your team has in real-time.
