While by no means is ours an exhaustive list, it\u2019s certainly a helpful primer on ideas you can hold near and dear (or not!) as you swipe left or right on upcoming L&D strategy decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-in-post-1-5-1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41875\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What&#8217;s hot? Artificial intelligence<\/strong>.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To the surprise of probably no one, generative AI has been a consistently massive tech and business topic since ChatGPT burst into the zeitgeist in late 2022. You might be tempted to think AI will mostly impact computer programming, visual arts, or the act of writing an email. But there\u2019s an argument that L&D will experience outsized change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOf all the domains to be impacted by AI, perhaps the biggest transformation is taking place in corporate learning,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/joshbersin.com\/2023\/12\/ai-is-transforming-corporate-learning-even-faster-than-i-expected\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to analyst Josh Bersin<\/a>, Founder and CEO of The Josh Bersin Company. \u201cIt\u2019s now clear that AI will revolutionize this space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How? By generating content (and dramatically reducing the time and complexity involved), by personalizing the learner experience ( understanding the details of content, tailoring learning paths to individual needs, and improving their delivery), by identifying and developing skills (inferring the capabilities of individuals and delivering the right training), and by replacing training with knowledge tools (creating and deploying&nbsp; intelligent agents or chatbots that provide information and solve problems), according to Bersin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-in-post-2-5-2-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41876\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s <em>not<\/em> hot? Carelessly embracing AI<\/strong>.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent survey, AI dominated the list of hot trends impacting L&D, capturing an unprecedented 21.5% of the vote. That study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/donaldhtaylor_the-ld-global-sentiment-survey-2024-summary-activity-7163501020105408512-qjh5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the 2024 <em>Learning and Development Global Sentiment Survey<\/em><\/a>, polled more than 3,200 L&D professionals in 97 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While AI topped the <em>Global Sentiment<\/em> hot trends list, it also topped the survey\u2019s list of L&D challenges in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou read that right,\u201d noted Donald H. Taylor, survey lead researcher. \u201cAI is both respondents\u2019 hottest trend and their greatest concern for the coming year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attitudes vary from company to company, of course. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/ceos-are-wary-about-the-business-implications-of-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Concerned business leaders are particularly wary<\/a> about a lack of regulation, the costs of AI, ethical questions linked to the technology, and the challenge of building the skills needed to use AI effectively.Savvy learning leaders will likely view that last item as an opportunity as they look to drive business impact by upskilling workers in critical areas. At the same time, those learning leaders increasingly will be tasked with understanding how to <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2022\/03\/ethics-and-ai-3-conversations-companies-need-to-be-having\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ethically<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbestechcouncil\/2023\/12\/27\/ai-in-security-policies-why-its-important-and-how-to-implement\/?sh=2b2be0ca5d75\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">securely<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplinger.com\/personal-finance\/where-ai-can-save-businesses-the-most-money\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cost-effectively<\/a> incorporate AI into L&D platforms.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s hot? Building skills, skills, skills through collaborative experiences<\/strong>.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You recently might have heard the terms <em>cohort learning experience<\/em> or <em>learning academies<\/em>. Maybe you\u2019re already deep into building one. Academies, <a href=\"https:\/\/joshbersin.com\/2023\/01\/a-new-generation-of-mastery-based-learning-platforms-has-arrived\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to Bersin<\/a>, are the \u201cnext big step in corporate learning.\u201d Why? They promise a solution to a problem that billions of dollars spent so far haven\u2019t solved: managing and closing the ever-widening global skills gap.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/learning-academies-101-everything-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A learning academy is a collaborative place<\/a> where employees develop deep skills that align with business needs, often in groups or cohorts. Champions of academies think big, and they understand that deep upskilling is a different critical learning need than training or everyday learning. The likelihood of this happening increases when people are <em>engaged<\/em> with learning options and content they\u2019re free to manage and consume on their own versus centralized, mandated training cascaded down from on high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forces fueling interest in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbesbusinesscouncil\/2024\/02\/26\/what-is-decentralized-education\/?sh=7e7d9cc53984\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decentralized alternatives to traditional higher education<\/a> are also hard at work influencing businesses. The premise? Workforce development is more effective and impactful when employees are engaged with learning that\u2019s important to not only their specific roles but also their immediate individual needs as well as their long-term personal goals.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/ld-in-the-age-of-intelligence-a-conversation-with-max-wessel-new-degreed-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Degreed President Maxwell Wessel recently noted<\/a>, \u201cPeople have faster career growth when you can ensure that the learnings they need are at their fingertips. . .\u00a0 In a skills-based organization, it\u2019s a lot easier to target individuals with relevant content and keep them up to speed than to ask them to learn everything the average person in their role needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-in-post-3-6-1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41877\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s hot? Democratized learning focused on front-line populations<\/strong>.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The global market for training frontline workers will likely double to more than $46 billion by 2028, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/frontline-workers-training-market-worth-46-7-billion-by-2028---exclusive-report-by-marketsandmarkets-301964330.html\">according to a recent report<\/a> by the management consulting firm MarketsandMarkets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Benefits of engaging deskless employees include fewer accidents and injuries, higher customer satisfaction, reduced turnover, operational agility, and higher morale, according to the report.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accounting for 70% of the U.S. workforce, frontline employees\u2014such as retail, hospitality, and healthcare workers\u2014more often than not value career growth above compensation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/Industries\/Retail\/Our-Insights\/The-Great-Attrition-in-frontline-retail-and-what-retailers-can-do-about-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to industry analysts at McKinsey & Co<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deskless workers tend to be highly skilled, often work with their hands, and typically need to adhere to strict compliance regulations. And because they\u2019re not at a computer all day, it\u2019s sometimes harder for them to be trained in traditional ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Access to learning is key. It\u2019s important that frontline workers feel part of the team, even if they\u2019re not in contact with their deskbound coworkers on a daily basis. Learning programs focused only on desk- or knowledge-workers<\/strong>.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If democratized learning is key to reaching frontline workers, then naturally that means moving beyond pervasive L&D strategies and programs focused on office workers. But how? Let\u2019s take a closer look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with online and mobile learning options; video courses, podcasts, and in general any type of bite-size content can make learning easier for workers in the field or on the go.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Ecopetrol, a Colombian national oil and gas company, implemented new learning experiences, <a href=\"https:\/\/get.degreed.com\/ecopetrol-case-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a new learning mindset was instilled in all levels of workers<\/a>. During a six-month stretch, people completed 440,000 learning items. Learning leaders were surprised to find some of the biggest early adopters were people in operations and maintenance roles, not desk jobs. This engagement outpaced anything L&D had expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Encouraging workers to learn on their own is as important as democratizing access to available tools and resources.
