The findings reveal a critical confidence gap in the workforce&rsquo;s ability to adopt generative AI (Gen AI) effectively \u2013 despite the technology&rsquo;s accelerating impact on job roles and workflows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research, based on a survey of employees across industries and geographies, shows that while <strong>48% of professionals expect Gen AI to change their job responsibilities<\/strong>, <strong>78% lack the confidence to use these tools effectively<\/strong>. This gap presents both a <strong>risk to productivity and a powerful opportunity for performance gains<\/strong> when addressed strategically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBig businesses are investing billions in Generative AI technology. But so far, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ey.com\/en_us\/insights\/emerging-technologies\/quarterly-ai-survey\">only a fraction of those investments<\/a> are yielding the expected ROI. And lack of Gen AI expertise is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2024-05-07-gartner-survey-finds-generative-ai-is-now-the-most-frequently-deployed-ai-solution-in-organizations\">one of the biggest challenges<\/a>,\u201d said Todd Tauber, Senior VP Marketing at Degreed. \u201cSo our research focuses on what it takes to build that expertise \u2014 by focusing on what the most confident, fluent people do differently to learn.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The case for building workforce AI skills&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The research makes a clear business case for building more confidence in workforce AI skills. Those who weave Gen AI into their daily work are 12x more likely to feel very confident using GenAI to deliver business outcomes. These workers are not AI specialists; rather, they\u2019re employees across functions using Gen AI to automate, synthesize, and solve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Very Confident<\/em> Gen AI users are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1.3x more likely to learn on the job&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2x more likely to use Gen AI daily<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4x more likely to apply it to real problems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>77x more likely to derive measurable value from their use of Gen AI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Organizations must enable learning in the flow of work<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The research also reveals that building Gen AI fluency isn\u2019t about access alone \u2013 it\u2019s about creating the right environment to build Gen AI skills. Organizations seeing the most progress are those that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clearly define how Gen AI changes roles and responsibilities<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Embed structured, hands-on Gen AI learning into daily workflows<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Align leadership across HR, IT, and L&D to support confident, consistent adoption<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the most important takeaways from this research is that confidence in Gen AI isn&rsquo;t just about technical skill\u2014it&rsquo;s about mindset and support,\u201d said Lisa Tenorio, SVP Product Innovation at Harvard Business Publishing Corporate Learning. \u201cLearning happens best when people are encouraged to experiment, apply, and reflect in their real work environment.
