Integrating learning in the flow of work is not as simple as just plugging your learning content into the systems and tools your people use to do their jobs \u2014 applications like Microsoft Teams and Office 365, Slack, and Salesforce \u2014&nbsp;or even Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, it\u2019s a start. But to really weave learning in the flow of work, you need to think bigger and harder. Because now, people are also taking courses on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B11D_wWBY_g\/\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram<\/a>, binge-watching how-to videos on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.tiktok.com\/en-in\/tiktok-collaborates-with-indias-leading-elearning-platforms-to-encourage-digital-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">TikTok<\/a>, and connecting with coaches through <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.com\/experiences\/151570\" target=\"_blank\">Airbnb<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re even learning new skills <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/juliacarriew\/status\/1222732753029885952\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on the job<\/a>, in the real world, on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All in, the workforce spends at least three times more time developing skills outside your HR and work systems than they do through your systems. And you can\u2019t make intelligent decisions about where or how to invest in your people if you only see part of the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start Somewhere<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We get it. You&rsquo;re struggling to get people into your virtual classrooms and online courses, while Microsoft Teams has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/blog\/2020\/10\/28\/microsoft-teams-reaches-115-million-dau-plus-a-new-daily-collaboration-minutes-metric-for-microsoft-365\/#:~:text=October%2028%2C%202020-,Microsoft%20Teams%20reaches%20115%20million%20DAU%E2%80%94plus%2C%20a%20new%20daily,minutes%20metric%20for%20Microsoft%20365&text=Today%20we%20announced%20that%20Microsoft,daily%20active%20users%20(DAU).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">115 million<\/a> active users every day and Slack has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20191010005813\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">12 million<\/a>. You fish where the fish are. So go ahead: embed learning in your workplace tools. It\u2019s a smart place to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/how-the-workforce-learns-2019-about-the-research\/\" target=\"_blank\">research<\/a> by Degreed and Harvard Business Publishing\u2019s Corporate Learning unit shows nearly one in five (16%) workers, managers, and business leaders say it would be extremely useful to access learning resources in their messaging or collaboration systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-in-post-1-3-1024x576.png\" alt=\"Learning in the flow of work... software\" class=\"wp-image-35948\"\/><figcaption>Source: Degreed + Harvard Business Publishing Corporate Learning, How the Workforce Learns, 2019<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Even more of these people think it would be extremely useful to access learning through their <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/degreed-brings-upskilling-platform-to-microsoft-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">office productivity apps<\/a> (32%) or specialized job tools (22%), like Salesforce for sales reps or Jira and ServiceNow for IT professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the board, people who have the most positive learning experiences at work&nbsp;are more likely to say these kinds of integrations into their workflow tools are helpful. There is potential here for sure. But there are also limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Be Useful<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One big limit, of course, is time. The typical worker, manager, and business leader only spend an average of 14 minutes per work each day using company-provided resources to develop knowledge and skills for their career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-in-post-2-1024x576.png\" alt=\"Developing skills in minutes a day\" class=\"wp-image-35949\"\/><figcaption>Source: Degreed + Harvard Business Publishing Corporate Learning, How the Workforce Learns, 2019<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Next to that, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4289748-slack-technologies-inc-work-ceo-daniel-butterfield-q2-2020-results-earnings-call-transcript?part=single\" target=\"_blank\">90 minutes<\/a> users spend active on Slack every workday are a tempting target. But if you want some of those minutes, get ready to fight for them, because people use Slack (and its competitors) mainly for communication and collaboration,\u00a0not for learning in the flow of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Product designers call this idea <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/09\/know-your-customers-jobs-to-be-done\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">jobs-to-be-done<\/a> \u2014 the idea that people use specific tools to accomplish specific things. For Slack, the main jobs-to-be-done are <a href=\"https:\/\/slackhq.com\/work-is-fueled-by-true-engagement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">messaging and sharing files<\/a>. A typical user sends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2019\/5\/1\/18511575\/productivity-slack-google-microsoft-facebook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">200<\/a> messages a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do the math on that. Two hundred messages a week works out to 40 a day, Monday to Friday; 29 if you include weekends. So if Slack users are only \u201cactive\u201d for 90 minutes a day, that means they\u2019re sending a message every two to three minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And since COVID-19 forced the big shift to remote work, it\u2019s gotten even harder. In the year from March 2020 to February 2021, time spent in Microsoft Teams meetings swelled by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/worklab\/work-trend-index\/hybrid-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2.5x<\/a> and the average Teams user now sends 45% more chats per week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In environments like those, there simply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmswire.com\/digital-workplace\/microsoft-viva-who-is-it-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">may not be as much room for meaningful learning<\/a> as you\u2019d think. Nearly three out of every four people (72%) in our study already said they can\u2019t learn for more than 30 minutes at a stretch before getting distracted or interrupted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same goes for Salesforce, by the way. Sales reps spend <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/blog\/2017\/11\/15-sales-statistics.html\" target=\"_blank\">42%<\/a> of their days working on tasks in CRM systems. But most of those tasks, like prioritizing leads, logging customer and deal information, or finding contacts, are all about productivity \u2014 not learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fact is, people use work apps mainly to get work done. And whether they\u2019re in <a href=\"http:\/\/mentalfloss.com\/article\/504767\/tragic-life-clippy-worlds-most-hated-virtual-assistant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microsoft Office<\/a> or on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/thanks-to-congress-you-may-soon-find-fewer-robots-calling-your-phone\/2019\/07\/05\/168e2404-96b6-11e9-8d0a-5edd7e2025b1_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">phones<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media-network\/2015\/jun\/22\/30-second-commercial-advertising-outdated\">T<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media-network\/2015\/jun\/22\/30-second-commercial-advertising-outdated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/adage.com\/article\/turner-ignite\/interrupt-interruption-important-message\/310441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">printed pages<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/01\/19\/business\/as-consumers-revolt-a-rush-to-block-pop-up-online-ads.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">web pages<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/digiday.com\/media\/mobile-ad-blocking-becoming-bigger-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mobile apps<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forrester.com\/report\/Consumers+Want+Convenience+Not+Conversations\/-\/E-RES142249\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chatbots<\/a>, we have little patience for interruptions. So wherever you decide to put learning, make sure it&rsquo;s useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Go Everywhere<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter how useful the learning inside your company\u2019s systems is, though, it\u2019s still limited to your company\u2019s systems. Your workforce is not. They\u2019re not limited to your workplace, to your workweek, to your working hours, or to your technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What people forget in all the hype about learning in the flow of work is that a lot of work (as well as learning) still happens in real life \u2014 on the job, through <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/samueljscott\/status\/1263107529657257986?s=21\" target=\"_blank\">independent experiences<\/a>, and in interactions with other people, like colleagues, managers, mentors or customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workers and leaders in our study invest three times more time developing skills on their own as they do through company-provided resources (a median of three and a half hours a week). And most of that time is not spent using traditional L&D solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only half took any live class (43%) or online course (52%), and two-thirds of them only did so three or four times. Most, however, leveraged articles (86%), books (79%), videos (63%), search (63%), webinars (59%), or podcasts (47%), usually at least once a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-in-post-3-1024x576.png\" alt=\"We build skills across APIs, URLs, and IRL \" class=\"wp-image-35950\"\/><figcaption>Source: Degreed + Harvard Business Publishing Corporate Learning, How the Workforce Learns, 2019<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>More than one in three people (36%) received coaching from a manager or mentor at least once a month, and 52% grew through feedback from their team or peers. In other words, most of how people develop their skills and learn in the flow of work happens everywhere \u2014 across APIs, URLs and IRL (in real life).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Contribute and Contextualize<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>That brings us back to those Instagram courses, TikTok videos, and Airbnb coaches. They\u2019re just the beginning. You can now take a Harvard course in your <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcontentnext.org\/blog\/2019\/04\/01\/not-just-for-news-hbrs-evergreen-approach-to-newsletters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">email<\/a> app, ask <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/ref=lp_13727921011_nr_n_3?fst=as%3Aoff&rh=n%3A13727921011%2Cn%3A%2113727922011%2Cn%3A14284821011&bbn=13727922011&ie=UTF8&qid=1568946691&rnid=13727922011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alexa<\/a> (or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/google-glass-2-is-here\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Glass<\/a>) for instructions, and get <a href=\"https:\/\/mitsloan.mit.edu\/ideas-made-to-matter\/could-artificial-intelligence-based-coach-help-managers-master-difficult-conversations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coached<\/a> by an AI-powered \u2018bot named Otto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also learn to create learning videos by watching <a href=\"https:\/\/creatoracademy.youtube.com\/page\/lesson\/edu-channel-start\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube<\/a> videos or <a href=\"https:\/\/webflow.com\/blog\/scrollytelling-guide?utm_source=Scrollytelling&utm_medium=FBIG&utm_campaign=Workhorse-Mobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">take tutorials<\/a> on something called scrollytelling (an emerging skill in data visualization) on the blog of a company called Webflow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few things you can\u2019t do, though. You can\u2019t anticipate or manage everything people learn. You can\u2019t cram it all into Teams or Salesforce. And you can not track completions on Instagram, TikTok, Airbnb, Gmail, Alexa, YouTube, blogs or in real life. Not really.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what can you do with all that learning <em>beyond<\/em> the flow of work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/trackable-links-can-connect-your-learning-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">encourage<\/a> people to explore it. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/degreed-does-data-how-learning-recommendations-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guide<\/a> them to relevant resources. And you can empower them to <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/how-degreed-brings-learning-into-the-flow-of-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">crowdsource<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/how-the-workforce-learns-in-2019-user-generated-content\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">share<\/a> useful learning wherever they find it. Help them contribute and add context to content, not just consume it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe that\u2019s why two-thirds of the people we asked (64%)&nbsp;told us it would be \u201c\u2018extremely useful\u201d to access learning resources through their browsers. The browser, after all, is&nbsp;the one tool that goes pretty much everywhere people work (and read, watch, listen and communicate).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, and don\u2019t forget about Teams and Slack. A lot of that guiding, sharing, discussing, reflecting, and feedback happening on the job and in between people <em>is<\/em> happening in there \u2014 while they\u2019re working.
