And yet, most leaders have not figured out how to build skills at scale. In fact, only 18% of those CEOs reported \u201csignificant progress\u201d in their upskilling efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The benefits of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/7-steps-for-upskilling-support-internal-mobility\/\" target=\"_blank\">upskilling<\/a> are huge. PwC found that successful skill-building programs lead to stronger culture, higher productivity, and accelerated innovation. Effective upskilling also makes it easier to attract and retain talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The perils of ignoring a skill strategy are notable, too. CEOs struggling with the skills gap are <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/ceo-survey\/2019\/report\/pwc-22nd-annual-global-ceo-survey.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">worried<\/a> about missed market opportunities, rising talent costs, stunted growth, and a lack of innovation. They also expect quality standards and customer experience to suffer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-in-post-1-8-788x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Is your upskillinge effective? \" class=\"wp-image-36565\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mastercard has proven how effective <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/success-story-how-mastercard-returned-to-its-technology-roots\/\" target=\"_blank\">upskilling pays off<\/a>. Facing fintech startups in the wake of the recession, CEO Ajay Banga insisted that this payments company would become a technology company. Mastercard\u2019s L&D team responded by revolutionizing its digital offerings, especially for the crucial Operations & Technology division. From 2016 to 2019, employee adoption of digital learning climbed steadily to 96% and the average number of learning platform logins per employee tripled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that same timespan, Mastercard\u2019s stock price tripled too, as the company broke through in key areas like mobile payments and cybersecurity. Was the stock surge just a coincidence? The learning leadership doesn\u2019t think so. \u201cThat represents Mastercard having the right skills and people to explore new payment technologies,\u201d declared Steve Boucher, the VP of Global Talent Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Time to Shift the Paradigm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If the benefits of upskilling are so obvious, why aren\u2019t most companies making progress? The problem is the paradigm. As artificial intelligence and machine learning make uniquely human capabilities more valuable, companies can no longer treat people like interchangeable parts. Workers thrive with variety, fluidity, and autonomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Focusing on individuals will transform upskilling efforts.
