Early Mesopotamians characterized the world as a flat, floating disk. Other ancient traditions imagined <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Axis_mundi#Background\" target=\"_blank\">a mountain<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ziggurat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">layered temple<\/a> ascending heavenward before new calculations helped the astute perceive the earth as spherical, which space exploration eventually confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New methodologies can change the way we view the world. They can embolden us to move forward and do better. John F. Kennedy\u2019s call to the moon did that for the scientific community in the 1960s and later inspired our co-founder, David Blake, to approach education with a new lens. As a nod to his ethos, Degreed used <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/news-photo\/president-john-f-kennedy-reflects-the-crowd-in-his-ray-ban-news-photo\/76210427\" target=\"_blank\">JFK\u2019s iconic sunglasses<\/a> as inspiration for our logo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and <\/em><strong><em>measure the best of our energies and skills<\/em><\/strong><em>.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp; &#8211;<em>President John F. Kennedy at Rice University, Sept. 12, 1962<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the same way, the Skills Lifecycle brings HR leaders to the light with a new approach to <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/top-10-resources-2019-upskilling-your-workforce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"upskilling (opens in a new tab)\">upskilling<\/a> the workforce. The Skills Lifecycle includes four steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Align<\/li><li>Benchmark<\/li><li>Curate<\/li><li>Develop<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/the-skills-lifecycle-steps-1024x595.jpg\" alt=\"skills lifecycle stages\" class=\"wp-image-29550\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/the-skills-lifecycle-alignment-new-hr\/\" target=\"_blank\"> alignment<\/a>, HR uncovers the priorities of the C-Suite and line of business leaders, so that <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/stop-stealing-careers-enterprise-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Learning & Development (opens in a new tab)\">Learning & Development<\/a> can be in lockstep to deploy training plans. Next, HR arms employees with the tools to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/skills-lifecycle-benchmarking-isnt-just-baseball\/\" target=\"_blank\">benchmark<\/a> and profile their skills, giving employees a way to signal their expertise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After these two first phases, the company leadership and employees have spoken. They\u2019ve shared their objectives and measured their skills. Armed with strategy and data, it\u2019s time for HR to respond. Enter curation, the third phase of the Skill Lifecycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Curation is Queen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1996, Bill Gates published an essay entitled \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@HeathEvans\/content-is-king-essay-by-bill-gates-1996-df74552f80d9\" target=\"_blank\">Content is King<\/a>.\u201d Like JFK, Gates envisioned a new future: a world in which the Internet serves as the primary marketplace for information, available in a <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/engage-learners-by-offering-more-diverse-options\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"range of mediums (opens in a new tab)\">range of mediums<\/a> and generating revenue for creators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cOver time, the breadth of information on the Internet will be enormous, which will make it compelling.\u201d -Bill Gates, \u201cContent is King\u201d 1996<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the consumer internet has gained popularity, the content has become ubiquitous. Blogs on Medium, videos on YouTube, photographs on Flickr, tweets, memes, podcasts, top ten lists \u2013 the stream is continuous. By 2020, it\u2019s estimated that for every person on the planet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.domo.com\/learn\/data-never-sleeps-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">1.7MB of data <\/a>will be generated per second. This galaxy of data comes with a challenge for creators and marketers: to rise above the noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HR faced the same conundrum. How can a team with the scope and resources of a single company compete with the wide web of the Internet? Findings from the High-Impact Learning Organization study by Bersin show employee learning is hampered by too much content, not a lack of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Left unfiltered, the utopia of Gates\u2019 Internet becomes more overwhelming than compelling. This problem has shifted L&D professionals from a creation to a curation mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Lifecycleblog_pt3_employeelearning-1024x336.jpeg\" alt=\"Employees are most motivated to learn new skills when there is a clear link to their current or future role\" class=\"wp-image-38488\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Curate?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>More than a buzzword or fad, curation will be a key tactic to help HR teams avoid an untimely end, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DYDaIyfitn8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Gravity<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DYDaIyfitn8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"> style<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to PwC\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/ceo-agenda\/ceosurvey\/2019\/gx.html\" target=\"_blank\">22<\/a><sup><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/ceo-agenda\/ceosurvey\/2019\/gx.html\" target=\"_blank\">nd<\/a><\/sup><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/ceo-agenda\/ceosurvey\/2019\/gx.html\" target=\"_blank\"> Annual Global CEO Survey<\/a>, company executives are feeling the strain of economic and geopolitical uncertainty. Most (77%) plan on turning to \u201coperational efficiencies\u201d to drive revenue growth. Translation: budget cuts, layoffs, and doing more with less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deloitte\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/insights\/us\/en\/focus\/human-capital-trends.html\" target=\"_blank\">2019 Global Human Capital Trends<\/a> warns of similar patterns. HR professionals must brace for digital transformation \u2014 for the employees they support, and in their own departments. On average, developing one hour of e-learning content <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.td.org\/insights\/l-d-enters-the-age-of-curation\" target=\"_blank\">costs $30,000<\/a>. By curating existing content, learning and development teams will be able to use diminishing resources more effectively. They can transition from the time-consuming and expensive work of content generation to the efficient practice of curation. The curation, too, will increasingly be accelerated by technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curation also enables scale. The Digital Learning Consortium (DLC) represents <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/dlc.mybluemix.net\/members.html\" target=\"_blank\">a collection of thought leaders<\/a> in the Learning & Development space. The group\u2019s 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/dlc.mybluemix.net\/files\/DLC_Report_Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Voice of the Learner Survey Report<\/a> found learners have an assortment of ways they prefer to learn. Around 20% prefer videos for just-in-time learning. While 70% agree that peer interaction in groups improves learning, 58% don\u2019t want as much interaction and still prefer self-guided online courses. The list of variables continues to include the time of day, location, and the task at hand. Curating over creating means you don\u2019t have to staff a production company to meet the range of preferences for learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Degreed has been talking about curation, too. Curation 2.0 extends the curation mindset beyond L&D to that of recruiting, talent management, and development. Remember, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/the-skills-lifecycle-alignment-new-hr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">New HR<\/a>, all of these functions are increasingly aligned and operating in stride with the business needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curation 2.0 focused on career-centered curation. Companies must curate opportunities for employees. The DLC report also found employees are most motivated to learn new skills when there is a clear link to their current or future role. Consider adopting technology that makes career-related goal-setting an explicit part of the employee experience. Use your own employee skills benchmarking data or an up-to-date competency framework to articulate the skills relevant to various positions.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/lifecycleblog_pt3_curate-1024x500.jpeg\" alt=\"Employees are most motivated to learn new skills when there is a clear link to their current or future role\" class=\"wp-image-38487\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When an opportunity is curated for employees, the company gets a collection of expertise. The majority of global executives believe they will need to retrain a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/McKinsey\/Featured%20Insights\/Future%20of%20Organizations\/Skill%20shift%20Automation%20and%20the%20future%20of%20the%20workforce\/MGI-Skill-Shift-Automation-and-future-of-the-workforce-May-2018.ashx\" target=\"_blank\">quarter of their workforce<\/a> within the next five years.
