On the other hand, if you\u2019re like me, you may be wondering how to remain employable in an uncertain future. Thoughts like, \u201cWill a robot take my job?\u201d creep into your brain as you nervously start wondering what you can do about it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve read articles about how automation will disrupt the workforce and you\u2019ve likely already seen the effects of digital transformation in your organization. Here\u2019s the thing, though: you don\u2019t have to panic. The key to future employability lies with proactively changing your mindset and looking toward the future. How do we get there? It all starts with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"building habits (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/establishing-a-continuous-learning-habit\/\" target=\"_blank\">building habits<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-in-post-1-1024x577-1.jpg\" alt=\"Make Learning a Habit\" class=\"wp-image-36311\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Change Can Be a Good Thing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A fourth Industrial Revolution is fully upon us, bringing with it tremendous opportunities along with immense change. The practical impact on our jobs will be the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2019\/02\/research-automation-affects-high-skill-workers-more-often-but-low-skill-workers-more-deeply\" target=\"_blank\">automation of many routine tasks<\/a>, which frees us up for deeper work. We\u2019ll have time to focus on applying skills such as critical thinking, creativity, strategic thinking, problem-solving and emotional intelligence \u2014 commonly referred to as \u201csoft skills\u201d or as I like to refer to them, \u201chuman skills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While artificial intelligence will make some jobs obsolete, it will also create new jobs. Those jobs can\u2019t yet be predicted but we can take a look at the World Economic Forum\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2018\/09\/future-of-jobs-2018-things-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\">skills for 2022 list<\/a>. In the number two spot on the list of growing skills is \u201cactive learning and learning strategies.\u201d I\u2019ll bet that you didn\u2019t see that coming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the World Economic Forum report doesn\u2019t just tell us what skills to grow, it offers advice on how to get there. <em>\u201cFor workers, there is an unquestionable need to take <\/em><strong><em>personal responsibility for one\u2019s own lifelong learning <\/em><\/strong><em>and career development.\u201d World Economic Forum, 2018 Future of Jobs Report<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">There is Learning All Around<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The $64,000 question in all this is how<em> <\/em>do we find the time to develop and become lifelong learners? Step one is recognizing the importance of your growth and development and then making it a priority. The second step is making learning a habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-in-post-2-4-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"It's ALL learning\" class=\"wp-image-36312\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s start with a better understanding of modern learning. You\u2019re likely learning and <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/skills-lifecycle-part-4-developing-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"developing skills (opens in a new tab)\">developing skills<\/a> every day without realizing it. Like when you look up how to do something in Excel or ask your coworker how to animate your PowerPoint. Maybe you needed a statistic for a report that you found in a quick online search. These activities count as learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning is not limited to formal structures \u2014 courses, workshops, lectures \u2014 and it doesn\u2019t need to take a tremendous amount of time, unlike earning a degree. It could be as simple as listening to a podcast on your daily commute or finishing that novel you\u2019ve been reading. Even fiction can help you develop your emotional intelligence and make you more empathetic \u2014 both important leadership skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make regular skill development and <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/how-workforce-learns-in-and-beyond-flow-of-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"continuous learning (opens in a new tab)\">continuous learning<\/a> even easier, I recommend leveraging the power of habit. Our brains operate in patterns and habits, and researchers estimate that about <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2014\/08\/140808111931.htm\" target=\"_blank\">40%<\/a> of our daily activity is habitual. When a behavior becomes a habit, it enables our brains to conserve energy for other tasks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the brain identifies a new habit, the pre-frontal cortex hands control over to our basal ganglia, an older part of our brain responsible for the functions like procedural learning, eye movement, and emotion. The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2012\/03\/05\/147192599\/habits-how-they-form-and-how-to-break-them\" target=\"_blank\">basal ganglia <\/a>then follows the designated behavior pattern, or habit, chosen by the pre-frontal cortex which allows the prefrontal cortex to do other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-in-post-3-4-1024x577.jpg\" alt=\"Creatures of Habit\" class=\"wp-image-36313\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Process of Progress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To bring attention to these habits (and reward yourself for them), take it one step further and track these efforts in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Degreed<\/a>.
