All in all, it\u2019s enough to make Dr. Suess\u2019s head spin. <br><br>Between these extremes, the smartest organizations are finding vendors that fit their individual needs. The squad at <a href=\"https:\/\/redthreadresearch.com\/\">RedThread Research<\/a> talked to dozens of top L&D teams and broke down their strategies in <a href=\"https:\/\/redthreadresearch.com\/2019\/08\/29\/intentionally-create-your-learning-tech-ecosystem\/\">an eye-catching infographic<\/a> that highlights the proper way to build a <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/5-important-capabilities-learning-ecosystem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"learning ecosystem (opens in a new tab)\">learning ecosystem<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At LENS 2019, Degreed\u2019s annual skill-building conference, we asked RedThread\u2019s Dani Johnson to discuss the findings with three learning leaders: Heather Bahorich of <a href=\"https:\/\/centricconsulting.com\/\">Centric Consulting<\/a>, Vidya Krishnan from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ericsson.com\/en\">Ericsson<\/a>, and Lee Schubert at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dimensiondata.com\/\">Dimension Data<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Organized Chaos: How Learning Technology Should Work Together in the Future of Work\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/aakEPBITkfg?start=235&feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The full conversation is worth watching, but we\u2019ve also summed up the major takeaways to help you select the right technology vendor for your learning ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Focus on Functions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years ago, innovative L&D teams put new technologies at the center of their strategy. Josh Bersin, president and founder of Bersin & Associates, developed <a href=\"https:\/\/joshbersin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/9-27-2018-10-15-59-AM-1024x578.png\">an iconic view<\/a> of this approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, RedThread Research finds that leading organizations have shifted their perspectives. Instead of tools and providers, top L&D teams emphasize <em>functions<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReally smart companies are actually thinking about what they\u2019re trying to do,\u201d Dani Johnson observed, \u201crather than the technology that they\u2019re going to use to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johnson\u2019s framework supports people through six major functions: <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/create-your-future-build-learning-habit-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"planning (opens in a new tab)\">planning<\/a> their learning, discovering resources, consuming content, experimenting with new skills, connecting with colleagues, and performing better on the job.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning administrators also have another two functions to fulfill: managing the process and measuring the outcomes. \u201cWe need to talk about <em>enabling<\/em> learning, rather than providing it,\u201d Johnson urged the audience at LENS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Ericsson, this philosophical shift is already underway. \u201cOur brand promise is to strive for \u2018easy,\u2019 and that definitely infuses into our philosophy when it comes to learning,\u201d explained Vidya Krishnan, Ericsson\u2019s Chief Learning Officer. \u201cIt\u2019s creating the habitat conditions for our employees to breathe in. User-centric design has been an incredibly strong guiding factor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the search for the right vendor, look for a seamless experience that facilitates every major learning function. Integrations across platforms are important but they should be invisible. Employees should barely notice as they move from one tool to the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe learning ecosystem is like oxygen,\u201d Krishnan added. \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t breathe without it but it\u2019s invisible. That may not sound very technical, but that is actually the philosophy that\u2019s driving every technical decision that we make.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/get.degreed.com\/buyers-guide-talent-development-technology?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=banner&utm_campaign=buyers%20guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-Banner-CTA-700x180-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31316\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Personalize to your preference\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we talk to vendors, they say things like, \u2018We want to be the front door for learning.\u2019 How many of you have heard that?\u201d asked Dani Johnson. Hands shot up across the LENS audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone needs a front door, she continued, but the floor plans can be customized. \u201cDepending on the characteristics of your organization, a different sort of structure may be more useful than another one,\u201d Johnson pointed out. \u201cSo we identified three.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most basic approach is a <em>single platform<\/em>. This setup suits risk-averse, compliance-driven organizations with a homogenous workforce. But most competitive companies don\u2019t work this way anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More modern organizations blend the other two models. Many use a <em>central system<\/em>, with a hub that connects to an array of additional tools. Others experiment with a <em>pure ecosystem<\/em>, which allows employees to access learning through any technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This blended approach suits Dimension Data. \u201cWe are somewhere in between,\u201d commented Lee Schubert, the company\u2019s Enterprise Learning Technologist. \u201cDegreed is definitely the front door and the start of the experience. We want to take advantage of the personalized homepage and get those <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/degreed-does-data-how-learning-recommendations-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"recommendations (opens in a new tab)\">recommendations<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut we are also cognizant that once workers move into, say, Pluralsight, there is a depth of information there. And that could be any one of the different partners,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As they move across the ecosystem, employees stay connected to the central system. \u201cWe\u2019ve put in place the integration to ensure that all completion data and the skills come back into Degreed, where we do our reporting,\u201d Schubert concluded. \u201cThat\u2019s why I think we are in the middle somewhere. We\u2019ll probably stay in the middle for now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Seek support and sustainability <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All ecosystems must be sustainable. \u201cWe talked about sustainability in two ways,\u201d Dani Johnson clarified. \u201cThe first one was sustainability within the organization.\u201d Some initiatives fail because they lack internal support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThen there\u2019s also sustainability on the outside,\u201d she continued. \u201cIs the vendor going to be around in three years?\u201d Johnson told the audience to consider how certain tools would appeal within the organization and how long they would last outside of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, survival is not enough. A thriving ecosystem should support evolution. \u201cForward-thinking leaders were continuously evaluating,\u201d Johnson declared, \u201ctrying to decide what was working, what wasn\u2019t, and then yanking out the things that don\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Centric Consulting, sustainability and evolution are crucial considerations for technology vendors. \u201cIs their vision similar to our vision about learners?\u201d asked Heather Bahorich, the firm\u2019s Talent Management Lead. \u201cIs it similar to how we think about the <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/videos\/lifelong-learner-maggie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"lifelong learner (opens in a new tab)\">lifelong learner<\/a> and the everyday learner? Are they going to be able to grow with us? Can we then grow with them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dialogue is the key to internal sustainability. \u201cWe ask for tons of feedback,\u201d she told the crowd. \u201cWhether it is from our learning leaders specifically or from the voice of our employee team. We\u2019re always asking for feedback on our entire ecosystem, how we can help you learn better, and how we can get you the skills you need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data collected from the ecosystem supplements this feedback. \u201cThe data helps build the story,\u201d Bahorich added. \u201cThere are really great feelings when you come to a stakeholder meeting, but not a lot of tangibles.
