If it seems tedious and confusing, it\u2019s because it\u2019s intentional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/redthreadresearch.com\/learning-tech-update-2020-more-more-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hundreds<\/a> of learning technology vendors. And every year, <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchbook.com\/news\/articles\/human-resources-hr-venture-capital-diversity-remote-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hundreds more pop up<\/a> to challenge the incumbents. L&D, Talent and HR teams have more options than ever. But there are never enough L&D, Talent and HR teams to buy it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means you get to sort through dozens of unoriginal products with copycat features and messaging \u2014 all trying to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saastr.com\/why-competition-is-so-bitter-in-saas-oligopolies-and-dominant-strategy-equilibriums\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">win<\/a>\u201d by spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt. Everyone says they can do what Degreed does. That\u2019s our problem, not yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what can you do when everyone is trying so hard to look, sound and be the same? Focus on what\u2019s different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are three questions to ask yourself to find some new perspective\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. What\u2019s Your Purpose and Priorities?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the data says:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Only 11% of HR technology leaders think their latest implementation delivered the expected improvement in employee experience, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/why-hcm-projects-failand-how-maximize-your-investment-kathi-enderes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Josh Bersin Company<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why it matters:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every HR solution promises to transform people and their experiences at work. But mostly they just standardize and automate HR processes. Are you investing in HR or your workforce?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re investing in this technology for a reason, right? So first, zoom out beyond features and focus on your purpose and priorities. What do you really need to accomplish? How do you want to do it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/differences-between-hcm-lms-lxp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Planes, trains and cars<\/a> all have engines, wheels, steering and seats, right? Features. But you wouldn\u2019t buy a plane or a train to take your kids to school every day. Because that\u2019s not what they were designed to do. That\u2019s what cars are for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar features often differ in significant ways even if they look alike, because the systems they\u2019re designed and engineered for have different purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Software has a purpose (the main thing it\u2019s built to do). It even has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/to-do-apps-failed-productivity-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opinions<\/a> (the how). That purpose and those opinions matter because different tools help users do similar things (like learn) in particular ways. And that shapes the benefits they unlock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lots of LXPs, LMSs, HCMs, content solutions, talent systems and collaboration tools can help people find learning content. But there are a lot of ways to learn; not just by consuming content. And different systems all have their own purpose and opinions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Degreed is designed to help <em>everyone, <\/em>not just L&D teams, understand, build and flex the skills they need. And the clues are usually in the names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HCM systems are for managing critical human capital processes and data. They generate value through cost reductions from standardizing routine HR tasks, like running payroll, enrolling in or managing benefits, doing performance reviews and requesting time-off. But learning delivers <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nucleusresearch.com\/research\/single\/value-in-hcm-ripples-from-the-epicenter-outward\/\" target=\"_blank\">less than 3%<\/a> of the value in most HCM systems. It\u2019s just not their purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LMSs are for managing content, events, compliance and learning records. So they generate value mainly by <a href=\"https:\/\/go.cornerstoneondemand.com\/report-ForresterTEIStudy-download.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">streamlining administrative and compliance tasks<\/a> for L&D teams, like managing sessions and enrollment, automating assignments and running reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, most LXPs exist to help people access learning content more easily. So they measure value through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/lxp-why-buyers-might-need-look-closely-next-big-david-perring-flpi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">engagement<\/a>. And productivity tools are built <a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/how-workforce-learns-in-and-beyond-flow-of-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to communicate, collaborate and get things done<\/a>. So their value comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/blog\/2019\/04\/23\/quantifying-value-collaboration-microsoft-teams\/#:~:text=Forrester%20study%3A%20The%20Total%20Economic,the%20customer%20and%20employee%20experience.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saving workers time<\/a> on high-frequency tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More value for the workforce, not just for HR. That\u2019s one way we think Degreed is different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. What Kind of Learning Experience Do You Want?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the data says:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Technology can provide at least 30 kinds of functionality to enable learning experiences. However, 60% of learning systems only do a few things really well, according to RedThread Research.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why it matters:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>More open and empowered learning experiences mean more flexibility, deeper engagement, new skills and better insights. Do you value efficiency over diversity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be specific about how you want learning to work. Everyone wants more engaging experiences. Everyone wants a more positive culture. But everyone and every app, system or platform also has different opinions about how to make those things happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Courses or resources? For performance support or for future development? Creating, curating or crowdsourcing? Managed by L&D and HR or owned by teams and managers? Technology can enable at least 30 kinds of functionality across the learning experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a lot to balance. No one system can <a href=\"https:\/\/hrblog.spotify.com\/2020\/05\/19\/learning-tech-the-wild-wild-west\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">do it all well.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Building features is not that hard. What\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/hrexecutive.com\/dissecting-the-employer-disconnect-in-hr-tech\/\" target=\"_blank\">hard<\/a> is doing it thoughtfully and putting them together in a fluid <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.strategy-business.com\/article\/Your-Employees-User-Experience-Should-Be-a-Strategic-Priority\" target=\"_blank\">experience<\/a> that\u2019s valuable for someone. Which is one big reason why <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pendo.io\/pendo-blog\/pendo-data-suggests-29-5-billion-global-cloud-rd-investment-squandered-software-features-go-unused\/\" target=\"_blank\">80%<\/a> of the features in a typical software product are rarely or never used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Social_2-1280x720-1-1024x576-1.png\" alt=\"&quot;Building features is not that hard. What\u2019s hard is doing it thoughtfully and putting them together in a fluid experience that\u2019s valuable for someone.&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-37156\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, lots of LXPs, LMSs, HCMs, content solutions, talent systems and collaboration tools can help you understand skills and integrate content, arrange it in a grid, or recommend stuff. But the magic is really in what\u2019s behind the user interface \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/articles\/cards-component\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cards<\/a>\u201d (and who can do what with them). Here\u2019s why\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The definition of \u201clearning experience\u201d is any interaction in which learning takes place. Any interaction. Not just consuming content on a screen. <a href=\"https:\/\/lxd.org\/news\/learning-experience-design-vs-user-experience-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LX is more than UI.<\/a> Because learning also happens across screens as well as on your own and with other people, in real life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All in all, there are at least <a href=\"https:\/\/redthreadresearch.com\/learning-methods-infographic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60 different ways people learn<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So when they say they\u2019re \u201copen\u201d or \u201cempowering\u201d (or whatever), ask yourself what they mean. Be specific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/degreed.com\/experience\/blog\/open-ecosystem-vs-closed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">open<\/a>\u201d mean you can add your company\u2019s content to courses they\u2019ve curated for you in their system (but you\u2019ll wait months and spend thousands on consultants to integrate anything else)? Or do you have the flexibility to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/jeffreyworlando_learning-mdtemployee-learninganddevelopment-activity-6917574091537297408-HYJ4?utm_source=linkedin_share&utm_medium=member_desktop_web\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mix and match<\/a> the content, people and opportunities that matter to your workforce \u2014 all kinds of resources from all kinds of sources?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who cares? Your team and your workforce will. Or that most HR technology doesn&#8217;t end up delivering the benefits buyers expect? That\u2019s because software doesn\u2019t get adopted or deliver benefits by itself. It takes work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Planning. Organizing. Implementing processes. Integrating systems. Configuring settings. Decommissioning old systems. Getting buy-in. Managing changes. Getting actual people to use it. Squashing bugs. Solving problems. Building habits. Winning support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone says they\u2019re committed to customer success.
