The end of 2021 left companies scrambling to recruit top talent, backfill positions, and manage the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/suzanne-lucas\/if-you-think-great-resignation-is-bad-just-wait-until-january.html\" target=\"_blank\">growing consequences<\/a> of The Great Resignation. But it\u2019s not all bad news: this challenge could make 2022 your biggest opportunity yet to realize significant ROI from investing in your people. And here\u2019s a New Year\u2019s resolution to help:<strong><em> enhance your employee experience<\/em><\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helping you slow staff departures is why we held two sessions at Degreed LENS 2021 \u2014 led by marketing and leadership experts Neil Bedwell and Jason Averbook \u2014 that zeroed in on prioritizing the people who make your organization thrive. The topic was timely; a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/worklab\/work-trend-index\/hybrid-work\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft study<\/a> found 41% of workers globally are likely to consider leaving their current employers within the next year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEmployee experience matters more than ever,\u201d said Averbook, CEO and Co-Founder at Leapgen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Give Your People What They Want<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How? Listen. Connect. Empathize. The answers to people problems aren\u2019t always technical or scientific. They can be psychological and emotional \u2014 human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople don\u2019t work for companies. Companies <em>are<\/em> people,\u201d said Bedwell, Founding Partner at LOCAL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/DEG-LENS_Live_Post-Event_Blog-Graphic_Pullquote_1280x720-O1@2x-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36396\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Acknowledging your organization is a collection of emotion-driven humans with goals and aspirations \u2014 just like you \u2014 can help you figure out how to improve the employee experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People want connections. They want to feel valued. They want to feel fulfilled by the work they do. And if they don\u2019t, they have options in today\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/inc-masters\/pay-attention-to-your-companys-greatest-asset-why-satisfied-employees-create-satisfied-clients.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">booming, employee-driven job market<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The focus on employee needs isn\u2019t just for their benefit. It\u2019s for the good of your company. Keeping workers satisfied can grow revenue. Companies with lower turnover rates <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/1094670512452792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">average profits four times higher<\/a> than those with high turnover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Happy Employees Lead to Happy Customers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be thinking if there\u2019s extra money and time to invest, it needs to go toward enhancing the prospect and customer experience. But what if you could do that by investing in your employees?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For decades, companies have tried to curate the \u201cperfect\u201d customer experience, with that ideal determined and dictated to employees by leadership. Often this results in rules and procedures that outline how employees should interact with consumers \u2014 controlling how workers dress, what they say and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that\u2019s just addressing symptoms of a poor consumer experience, not the roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can win clients with expensive marketing, a fantastic product and a well-dressed employee. But interactions with one unengaged, unfulfilled worker can ruin all of that. Consider this: if your people don\u2019t want to be at work, why would customers want to work with your organization?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Engaged employees are more likely to improve customer relations, driving 20% higher sales, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/238085\/state-american-workplace-report-2017.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gallup<\/a>. When your people feel as valued as the customers they\u2019re supporting, it helps deliver a better experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Bedwell reminded us, your employees create customer experiences \u2014 positive or negative. In fact, \u201cemployee experience is probably the biggest driver,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your people believe in your company, then your customers will too. So market to them. Emulate and reiterate the mission and purpose of your organization regularly. Be honest and involve them in decisions so they\u2019re invested in outcomes. Provide people-centric benefits that show you care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then you can see what a dedicated group of happy people can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour employees are an audience worth winning,\u201d Bedwell said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can you win your people over? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Fulfill emotional needs.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For many years, it\u2019s been an expectation (albeit a misdirected one) that emotions be left at the office door. But ignoring that workers have emotions doesn\u2019t stop them from feeling. And it impacts their work life. This is why many people are joining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/marcel-schwantes\/why-are-people-really-quitting-their-jobs-burnout-tops-list-new-research-shows.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">companies that prioritize well-being<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe you want to do that too but don\u2019t know where to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.achievers.com\/press\/achievers-survey-finds-without-recognition-expect-employee-attrition-2018\/?zd_source=hrt&zd_campaign=5503&zd_term=chiradeepbasumallick\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an Achievers study<\/a>, 74% of respondents cited interesting work as a top motivation to stay with their current employers and 69% cited recognition and rewards. In addition, 76% of respondents cited a positive corporate culture as important or very important. \u201cCompensation was seen as a lower priority for the workers surveyed,\u201d according to the study, \u201cranking below positive corporate culture and opportunities for career advancement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Because they\u2019re people. They crave recognition, fulfillment, personal growth and positivity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bedwell summed this up well: \u201cHappiness at work is actually driven by emotional needs.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To ring in the new year, check in with your employees, acknowledge their hard work and promote positivity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Help people learn and grow.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Our <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/stateofskills.degreed.com\/?utm_source=ORGD-OSO-Degreed-DSA-RPRT-stateofskillsreport--12_2020https:\/\/stateofskills.degreed.com\/?utm_source=ORGD-OSO-Degreed-DSA-RPRT-stateofskillsreport--12_2020%5C\" target=\"_blank\"><em>State of Skills<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>research report found nearly half (46%) of workers said they\u2019re more likely to leave their employer if they don\u2019t see a commitment to upskilling and reskilling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/DEG-LENS_Live_Post-Event_Blog-Graphic_Pullquote_1280x720-O2@2x-1024x576.png\" alt=\"Nearly half of workers said they're more likely to leave their employer if they don't see a commitment to upskilling and reskilling. Enhance employee experience to keep your workers. \" class=\"wp-image-36397\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEmployees are demanding to be developed to be empowered. And if they aren\u2019t, they will leave,\u201d Kat Kennedy, Chief Experience Officer at Degreed, told LENS attendees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re seeing that happen in real-time. But learning isn\u2019t just advantageous for workers. It can be a big-time differentiator for business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The benefit of learning is two-fold. Personal growth opportunities give workers reasons to stay and give your company competitive advantages \u2014 like new skills and the potential to increase clientele. Give your people opportunities to stretch themselves and you might be surprised what they can achieve.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When people engage with meaningful things, they can evolve and so can your organization. Sebastian Terry, Founder of 100Things, reminded us of this in his LENS keynote:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we evolve as individuals within a community of people who are all doing the same thing, then individual growth leads to collective growth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Trust your workers.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bedwell highlighted that efforts to control employees often prove more costly than simply trusting them to do the right thing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one example he gave, a company that tracked and monitored employee expenses to eliminate fraudulent claims decided to cut that program. Why? Because more money was spent on micromanaging people than lost from people cheating the system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be scary to relinquish a hold like that. But if you don\u2019t think your people are good or you can\u2019t trust them, then why are they there? Believe in your people so they can believe in you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The employee experience you create can inspire your people to not only stay but drive results and advocate for your organization.
