I wrote this entire blog post about an AI executive coach we\u2019ve been experimenting with and thought, \u201cAnyone reading this will probably just want to try it out first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reach.withsparks.com\/experiences\/02950d90-11b0-42e0-9a4f-e9b2994534cd\/c5005f4e-ffdc-4390-bd3b-c2f43a38abe2\">Check it out<\/a>! It\u2019s not perfect, but it is kind of fun. (We\u2019ll pay for the token usage, so don\u2019t chat all night.) We\u2019ll be leaving the sign-up open for a few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re done chatting, come back and read the rest of this post. And with that, back to our regular programming:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Yes, the robots can talk.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>OpenAI <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/hello-gpt-4o\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced on May 13<\/a> that a new conversational mode will be released in the next few weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These improved capabilities becoming ubiquitous will make chatting with AI verbally a regular way we interact with technology. So, what will it mean for L&D? And how did we get here? After all, voice assistants aren\u2019t new. So what\u2019s the big deal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We conducted a few experiments to find out, gathering input from L&D pros along the way. Join us for a look at the results\u2014and the implications. It\u2019s looking more and more like conversational AI will have a significant impact on some key aspects of L&D.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/reach.withsparks.com\/experiences\/02950d90-11b0-42e0-9a4f-e9b2994534cd\/c5005f4e-ffdc-4390-bd3b-c2f43a38abe2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/In-Post-1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42528\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First, a Quick Technology Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Voice assistants like Apple Siri and Amazon Alexa have been around for a while. They use natural language processing (NLP) to take a request and match it to canned responses. This means they\u2019re helpful for checking the weather, but also, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/03\/06\/microsoft-ceo-satya-nadella-virtual-assistants-dumb-as-a-rock-ai-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in 2023<\/a>, they\u2019re \u201cdumb as a rock.\u201d They don\u2019t have the dynamic or generative abilities of a large language model (LLM) like that used by ChatGPT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ChatGPT changed the game. In 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/whisper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Whisper<\/a> was introduced as a complement to ChatGPT-3.5, providing users the ability to convert audio into text. This allowed users to speak to ChatGPT, which could then read responses back at the click of a button. Audio and voice became usable, but the technology still lacked the ability to interrupt, be interrupted, or have a real conversation without strict instructions to take turns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newer startups have enabled more conversational interactions on top of LLMs. They introduced the ability to automatically detect turn taking, allowing for interruptions and speaking freely back and forth. They also added nice interjections like \u201cmmm hmms,\u201d which occurred while the AI was listening. Further, they analyzed vocal expressions. Some latency still happened in these experiences as they were essentially a multi-step process; an LLM like ChatGPT-4 creates a response and then a voice agent, a separate technology, speaks the response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then this month, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT-4o, the most recent version of the company\u2019s generative AI chatbot, will be able to natively understand and reply conversationally. This means that there will no longer be a voice agent reading responses from the LLM. The LLM will speak. If you tell the AI to \u201cslow down\u201d or \u201cpretend to be a character,\u201d it will. It will also be naturally vocally expressive and understand users\u2019 vocal expressions. Because it will all be built into the same system, it will be faster than anything that\u2019s come before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, a text model of GPT-4o has been released. The most advanced voice capabilities (including a controversial Scarlett Johansson-sounding voice) have not been released as of this publication. That means that right now, today, you can talk to GPT-4o, which is fast, but you have to tell the system if you want to interrupt (because it\u2019s still using the old voice input-readout technology). You can <a href=\"https:\/\/help.openai.com\/en\/articles\/8400625-voice-chat-faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">read details of what is currently available<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Log in today and you might see a screen similar to this when starting voice mode in ChatGPT:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/AD_4nXfKdM6iU_nTCxmCMSMYkIhggplUS8XhrAR-j0H0TEjwDLL54otSyQ1pldVEYiy_P8o1uQaOTPkxjiRCPAJJ3ai2xv5bW7hjfUvcR1tKzaYSJ5D-n7RwzdldFl7UPpk-jwtaftEZgYip2C3wKYkwUxtmWnKe.png\" width=\"624\" height=\"468\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Whew! That was a lot. Let\u2019s talk about what this could all mean for L&D after the floodgates open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Hypothesis: Faster, More Authentic Interactions for Practice and Reflection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We had previously explored chat-based scenarios (via typing) as a form of practice and role play. These interactions were fun at first, but the effort required to make them feel real (while you knew it was an AI) was hard to sustain. It was also weird to play out scenarios via chat that you\u2019d be more likely to have in a real spoken conversation (like a call).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.degreed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/AD_4nXeI2ksKBeFCOSKk0X2Qrb3JgaqUNPlZWYJnqZU02Agj6k0MDl-jjrB6-Qxe_MkjdPiaQOlTm-2vKC2cX9ssrDGiirf_2Cq_6rAS5dqi8NRRm4hq19VPR42YuNbgE1cSt_tFou4IvnaiYz9P3bvKlu6vDxws.png\" width=\"624\" height=\"309\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We wanted to add voice capabilities to see if it would make the scenario feel more real and make it easier to engage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Experiment No. 1: AI Coach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We used GPT-4 Turbo as our LLM and added a conversational layer on top. We then instructed the assistant to act as an executive coach. Prior research has shown GPT-4 to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2306.05685\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most effective at role playing<\/a> (from a limited evaluation of other models).<br><br>This video captures my first experience with this combination:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Conversationally Talking to an AI Executive Coach\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/4i8ZM6KgX0Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As you\u2019ll notice, there\u2019s a bit of latency but the conversational ability is impressive. I\u2019m the one having a harder time putting words together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I shared the link to try out the AI coach with L&D folks in my network for their feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall sentiment was positive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cNatural\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWow!\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cFantastic!\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cRealistic\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cSmooth\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cSomething I could see myself using on a daily basis.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And then there was my wife\u2019s reaction: \u201cThat is really freaky.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Comments on interacting via voice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conversational flow is very good and most human-like yet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Voice is good for reflection; people are less self-critical over voice because it is linear (they can\u2019t go back and make edits) and they don\u2019t see what they\u2019re out-putting. It felt faster and required less effort.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When asking the coach to slow down (when trying to document recommendations), the coach couldn\u2019t.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knew it was AI but became less aware over time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tone and inflections were good and conversational.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Latency was noticed but also called out as not too bad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Comments on the usefulness of the AI coach:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The coach offered ideas and recommendations that were helpful.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It prompted real reflection with good questions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Users found the approach and methodology effective.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The coach has a habit of reflecting back what the user said (mentioned as a positive and negative).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It suggested a role play to practice the recommendation, which was appropriate, but the role play itself felt a bit awkward.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Comments on the user interface:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Needs a way to document recommendations (mentioned several times).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wasn\u2019t immediately clear how to start the conversation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>May be helpful to have an avatar\u2014to feel like you\u2019re speaking to someone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Needs ways to pause (for reflection and to just step away).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Needs to communicate expectations about the length of the experience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Would be helpful to see a transcript, summary, next steps, or resources to revisit at a later time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Experiment No. 2: AI Role Playing with Expressive Understanding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this experiment, we wanted to see if expressive understanding and interactions with AI would feel natural. We experimented with a role playing interaction\u2014helping resolve a customer service interaction with an angry customer.<br><br>Here\u2019s a short clip:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AI Role Playing with Expressive Understanding: Customer Service\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/Lg_FR0n8SBs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We haven\u2019t gotten as much feedback on this experience yet, but here are my initial reactions. The role play was effective in that it made me uncomfortable! It was hard. It was stressful. I felt some level of \u201crealness\u201d hearing another person\u2019s upset voice.<br><br>But because I knew it was only role play, I knew I could also bail out when I felt stuck or uncomfortable. I would need some level of accountability or assessment to help me persevere. I also learned that I am not cut out for customer service roles!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had one of our sales leaders try this interaction, and they said that they spent 15 minutes speaking with the AI customer before they got to a good resolution. (It required a change of tactics halfway through.) The sales leader said they felt they had to solve the issue so they could \u201cwin.\u201d Sales people are just built differently I guess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also tried a coaching interaction with an AI that has expressive understanding, to see if it could detect my emotion without relying on the content of my words. While it was impressive that it could pick up on my sentiment (even if it wasn\u2019t reflected in my words), I wasn\u2019t a fan. Perhaps because I was in testing mode, it felt inauthentic when the AI acted like it understood my feelings. The AI also wasn\u2019t as good at detecting when to jump into the conversation, repeatedly interrupting my discontented ramblings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AI Role Playing with Expressive Understanding: Coaching\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/zDiV_Bph31I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Conclusion: Expression analysis is probably more helpful for real, human-to-human interactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Experiment No. 3: Faster with GPT-4o<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When GPT-4o text mode became available, we decided to revisit the AI coach we created in Experiment No. 1. Text mode is advertised as 50% faster than GPT-4 Turbo, so using it seemed like a great way to find out if we could reduce the latency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inclusion of GPT-4o in our AI coach did reduce the latency a bit, as you can see here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Using GPT-4o for Quicker Conversation Processing\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/LLl2xvG8AtM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Conclusion: Using GPT-4o, the latency in our AI coach application dropped from an average of 3.6 seconds to 2.2 seconds making the conversation much more natural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Looking Ahead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We aren\u2019t done experimenting with voice. We\u2019re implementing some of the suggestions we\u2019ve already received from L&D folks about the AI coach (including the inclusion of transcripts, summarization of action items, a better user interface, analysis, and feedback options).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll keep testing the latest LLMs. And, we\u2019ll explore voice for new use cases (maybe something used on the go, something interacted with during meetings, or something to help complete administrative tasks).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick peak at the live transcript work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Exploring Applications of AI in L&D\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/PqVWStaa_74?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Takeaways for L&D<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As consumer technology gets more advanced, it puts even more pressure on the experiences L&D creates. With this in mind, what does the advent of conversational voice AI mean for L&D professionals?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Voice AI isn\u2019t great for everything, but it seems well-suited for certain use cases (like skill development). Figure out what those are for your audiences and find appropriate solutions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Voice AI will let L&D reach more people with better experiences at less cost, but it will likely also create a premium for real, human interactions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certainly, effective coaching requires more than what our experiment offered.
